FACE

There are five hair removal methods appropriate for facial hair.

1. Bleach

Although bleach does not remove hair, it lightens the color of the hair so that it blends with the natural color of the skin. However, bleaching can temporarily discolor the skin by removing a surface layer of pigmentation. Marzena Hair Lightener, developed specifically for the face and body, is very effective in lightening facial hair with minimal alteration of skin color. Easier to mix than many bleaches, it provides results in a matter of minutes.

Click here for more information about Marzena Hair Lightener for the Face & Body

2. Cream & Lotion Depilatories

Creams and lotions are ideal for facial hair removal as they are simple to use and cause no discomfort. Usually the hair is removed only at the skin's surface, so the hair keratin is stimulated--just as it is in shaving -- and the hair grows back stronger. Marzena Hair Removal Lotion is suitable for the body, while Marzena Sensitive Hair Removal Lotion is suitable for the face, underarms and bikini area.

3. Wax Strips

Marzena Natural Wax Strips grip the hair. The wax encases and grips each hair so it is not broken off or cut, as with shaving, rather it is pulled out at the roots leaving the area hair free for 6 to 8 weeks. Smaller strips are ideal for the upper lip and eyebrow areas, and are by far the fastest long-lasting hair removal method for the face. Marzena Petite Genuine Wax Strips are ideal for the face. They contain a layer of natural pine wax between two strips of cellophane, offering excellent grip. Marzena Petite Genuine Wax Strips are economical, as well-the strip can be applied several times during each treatment.

For maximum effectiveness and minimal discomfort, it is important to hold the skin taut and pull the strip in the opposite direction of hair growth. Any wax remaining on the skin can be removed easily by either reapplying the same strip or by daubing the wax with the unwaxed side of the same strip.

A word of caution: many so-called "cold wax strips" are not wax at all, but rather chemicals that form a kind of gel. Their delivery can be impeded by changes in temperature and they do not effectively grip the hair. Marzena Petite Natural Wax Strips are completely natural pine wax providing maximum effectiveness, and contain no chemicals to adversely affect the skin.

4. Electrolysis

Touted as permanent hair removal, electrolysis involves inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle and electronically charging the root of the hair to kill it. However, a new root cell can form in the same area, causing regrowth. Compared to other hair removal methods, electrolysis is relatively new (see History of Hair Removal), time-consuming and expensive.

ARMS

There are four hair removal methods that are well-suited to the arm area.

1. Waxing

Waxing uproots the hair from its follicles for the longest-lasting (up to eight weeks), smoothest results of all temporary hair removal methods. Warm waxing is recommended to remove hair from the arms. Marzena Liquid Wax is a water soluble warm wax that is more pliable and easier to apply than many on the market today. When heated in a microwave oven, it also stays warm longer and requires little, if any, reheating. It comes with washable cloth strips that are a perfect size for the arm area, allowing large amounts of hair to be removed per treatment. What's more, clean-up is simple-water soluble wax means drips can easily be wiped off and wax residue can be washed off with just warm water.

2. Wax Strips

Genuine wax strips grip the hair. The wax encases and grips each hair so it is not broken off or cut, as with shaving, rather it is pulled out at the roots leaving the area hair free for 6 to 8 weeks. Large strips are ideal for the underarm area, and are by far the fastest long-lasting hair removal method for this area. Marzena Genuine Wax Strips are large and are ideal for arms . They contain a layer of natural pine wax between two strips of cellophane, offering excellent grip. Marzena Genuine Wax Strips are economical, as well-the strip can be applied several times during each treatment.

Marzena Genuine Wax Strips are completely natural pine wax providing maximum effectiveness, and contain no chemicals to adversely affect the skin.

3. Bleach

Although bleach does not remove hair, it lightens the color of the hair so that it blends with the natural color of the skin. Fine, dark forearm hair can be completely camouflaged by lightening it. However, bleaching can temporarily discolor the skin by removing a surface layer of pigmentation. Marzena Hair Lightener, developed specifically for the body, is very effective in lightening hair with minimal alteration of skin color. Easier to mix than many bleaches, it provides results in a matter of minutes.

4. Body Hair Inhibitor Serum

Hair growth inhibitors are a new development in hair removal. They actually slow the regrowth of body hair. Marzena has developed a concentrated inhibitor serum which substantially retards the growth of new hair. Designed for use after hair removal, it works most effectively when applied after using Marzena Liquid Wax or Genuine Wax Strips. After hair has been removed by the roots, the serum can penetrate the open hair follicle, interacting with the protein as it forms a new root cell. In addition to developing a concentrated inhibitor serum, Marzena is the first company to reformulate its lotion and cream depilatories to include hair growth inhibitor.

UNDERARMS

There are five methods of hair removal which are well-suited to the underarm area.

1. Cream & Lotion Depilatories

Typically, underarm skin is very soft and sensitive. Creams and lotions are ideal for underarm hair removal as they are simple to use and cause no discomfort. However, usually the hair is removed only at the skin's surface, so the hair keratin is stimulated -- just as it is in shaving -- and the hair grows back stronger, which means more frequent treatments are required to keep the area hair-free. Marzena Hair Remover Lotion with Inhibitor is a gentle, yet effective, fragrance free hair remover that works by removing the hair slightly below the skin's surface. Formulated with a hair growth inhibitor which penetrates the open hair follicle, it substantially retards the growth of new hair.

2. Waxing

Waxing uproots the hair from its follicles for the longest-lasting (up to eight weeks), smoothest results of all temporary hair removal methods. Warm waxing is recommended to remove hair from the underarms. Marzena Liquid Wax is a water soluble warm wax that is more pliable and easier to apply than many on the market today. When heated in a microwave oven, it also stays warm longer and requires little, if any, reheating. It comes with washable cloth strips that are a perfect size for the arm area, allowing larger amounts of hair to be removed per treatment. What's more, clean-up is simple-water soluble wax means drips can easily be wiped off and wax residue can be washed off with just warm water.

4. Body Hair Inhibitor Serum

Hair growth inhibitors are a new development in hair removal. They actually slow the regrowth of body hair. Marzena has developed an inhibitor serum which substantially retards the growth of new hair. Designed for use after hair removal, it works most effectively when applied after using Marzena Sugaring Wax or Marzena Natural Wax Strips. After hair has been removed by the roots, the serum can then penetrate the open hair follicle, interacting with the protein as it forms a new root cell. In addition to developing an inhibitor serum, Marzena is the first company to reformulate its lotion and cream depilatories to include hair growth inhibitor.

Types of Hair Removal Products

1. Depilatories (Creams & Lotions)

Depilatory creams and lotions, which remove hair at the skin's surface, have become the most common form of at-home hair removal over the past 30 years (see History of Hair Removal). Although painless, it traditionally has been a messy and rather smelly process. The active ingredient, a Thioglycolic Acid, releases a pungent odor when it is exposed to air, rubbed between the fingers and/or when it touches the body.

Depilatory creams and lotions have a more feminine connotation than shaving, and come in various strengths formulated for specific areas of the body. However, because the hair is chemically dissolved at the surface of the skin, the effect is similar to that of a razor: the hair grows back thicker.

2. Razors

Shaving has been in existence since ancient times (see History of Hair Removal). The razor or shaver cuts the hair off at the surface of the skin, causing hair to grow back -- sometimes as soon as a day or two later -- coarser. While the razor has always had its drawbacks (the danger of frequent nicks and cuts), its convenience and portability continues to be a draw.

[Return to list]

3. Waxes

Waxing uproots the hair from its follicles for the longest-lasting (up to eight weeks), smoothest results of all temporary hair removal methods. What's more, it can also decrease regrowth. There are several types of waxes. Following are the most common ones.

A) Hot Wax

Often called paraffin wax, the original hot wax (hard wax) took the form of a tray of solid wax derived mainly from tallow and resins. In order to work, it had to be heated. Once hot, it was applied to the skin and pulled off--almost as if it were a layer of skin with hair (from the roots) attached to it. This painfully slow method is still used in some salons today.

B) Warm Wax

Warm wax is actually a liquid sugar mixture, heated (on the stove or in a microwave oven), applied to the skin and then removed with muslin or cotton strips which absorb the wax, allowing it to grip the hair. Both warm and hot wax have the advantage of opening up the hair follicle and softening the layers of surrounding skin, easing the release of the hair with its root.

Click here for more information about Marzena Sugaring Wax

C) Cold Wax

Cold wax, in either paste or gel form, is applied to the skin without heating. However, most cold waxes are messy to apply (delivery from container to skin is difficult) and thickness of application cannot be controlled. The colder the room temperature, the more difficult the application and removal; what's more, the product is not in contact with the skin long enough to be warmed to maximum effectiveness.

D) Wax Strips

The wax strip system--or instant waxing--offers a convenient, quick, "no mess, no fuss" method of hair removal that requires no preparation. There are several different types of instant wax strips. Genuine wax strips grip the hair; when you pull them off, the area can remain hair-free for up to eight weeks. Some so-called wax strips are not wax at all, but rather chemicals that form a kind of gel. Their delivery can be impeded by changes in temperature and they do not effectively grip the hair.

4. Growth Inhibitors

Hair growth inhibitors are a new development in hair removal that actually slow the regrowth of body hair. Applied immediately after hair removal, the inhibitor saturates the exposed base of the hair follicle and begins the process of slowing down hair growth. It will start to work in about 2-3 days -- depending on how coarse the hair is, the method of hair removal used and the condition of your skin. Marzena has also added this revolutionary ingredient to its depilatory products for convenience.

5. Other Methods

Bleaching

Bleaching is an alternative to physical hair removal. Although bleach does not remove hair, it lightens the color of the hair so that it blends with the natural color of the skin. However, bleaching can temporarily discolor the skin by removing a surface layer of pigmentation.

Click here for more information about Marzena Hair Lightener for Face & Body

Electrolysis

Touted as permanent hair removal, electrolysis involves inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle and electronically charging the root of the hair to kill it. However, a new root cell can form in the same area, causing regrowth. Compared to other hair removal methods, electrolysis is relatively new (see History of Hair Removal), time-consuming and expensive.

Mittens

Mittens are an inexpensive method of hair removal. They scrub the surface of the skin, catching hair in their abrasive fiber and pulling it out, either at the root or above the skin. The abrasiveness can be harmful to delicate skin.

Laser

Laser hair removal is a costly procedure in which a laser beam is used to disable hair follicles. Not only is it the newest method of hair removal to be marketed, but it is also among the newest cosmetic laser treatments available in the U.S. and must be performed in a physician's office or in a special salon that is licensed to operate a Class II medical device. In the United States, manufacturers are prohibited by the FDA from claiming the hair won't grow back, but some estimates say one treatment can eliminate 30 to 40 percent of the hair for up to a year (the rest may grow back, but with a finer texture). While the number of treatments required to effectively remove the hair depends on the size of the area involved, typically two to four sessions are needed.
